NMJC graduates during commencement ceremony

Commencement ceremonies are a significant part of the college journey, marking the successful completion of degrees and certificates following earnest hard work and a commitment to academic rigor. At New Mexico Junior College (NMJC), this year’s commencement will follow in the example of last year by being held virtually to assure the safety of students and the community while simultaneously celebrating them. The commencement will begin at 7 p.m. on May 7th.

“We wish we could host a safe NMJC Commencement in the Lea County Event Center this spring,” provides Dr. Kelvin Sharp, president of NMJC. “Commencement is an important event within our academic year. We celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, and draw inspiration from their achievements as they seek to find their place in our world.”

While the administration of NMJC recognizes that public health guidelines could change before May and permit larger in-person gatherings, the decision was made that it would be too short notice to plan an in-person commencement if such an announcement was made.

The virtual ceremony will include a list of graduates, including name and degree awarded, along with a picture if one was submitted before the April 16 deadline.

The virtual commencement will be broadcast via livestreaming for all to see on the NMJC website and its Facebook page. For those who cannot attend the virtual event live, it will be recorded for future viewings at any point.

NMJC began offering education to aspiring students in 1966, and has since maintained a record of providing quality classes at lower-than-average tuition prices from its Hobbs campus. The student body of approximately 3,200 is enrolled in a variety of degrees, including sciences, art, and vocational trades.
