Every Fourth of July, Lovington holds a large, family-friendly celebration in Chaparral Park. The “Party in the Park” includes a number of events and activities that are designed to keep family members of all ages entertained. This year is no exception, with the bulk of the festivities kicking off around 1 p.m.

To most people, a holiday is a reason to share food, and the Party in the Park is one way to do it. A number of food trucks and vendors will be on hand, including Taco’N Madres, Rubio’s Mexican Food, and RG’s Tacos.

Both children and adults will have a tournament to compete in with the return of the annual three on three basketball tournament and a youth fishing derby.

The basketball tournament is divided into six brackets based on age: 10 and under, 11-12, 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, and 19 and older. Four people are needed to register for a team, along with the entry fee of $50. The tournament will begin at 10 a.m. at the park, and continue until approximately 10 p.m. Participants will receive tee shirts and are eligible for trophies depending on their performance. For more information, call Mike at 575-263-4918 or register online here. The tournament is sponsored by Estacado Federal Credit Union.

The youth fishing derby offers a chance for aspiring anglers to demonstrate their luck and their skills by landing the biggest catch. Participants in three age categories (3-7, 8-11, and 12-18) will be judged based on the weight of the fish caught in each category while the fisherman who catches the heaviest overall fish will win a special prize. Kids under 12 don’t need a fishing license, but those older than 12 will need to have theirs available. Every fisherman will be limited to using one rod and up to two hooks per rod. No Rebel Hooks will be permitted. The event begins at 8 a.m. and runs until 11. Sign up starts at 7:30, or register online here.

From 4-6 p.m., kids 12 and under will be able to participate in a hula hoop contest, bike parade, a sack race, and a three-legged race.

Other games and activities will be happening throughout the day, concluding with a fireworks display at 9 p.m. For a full lineup of the day’s events, click here.
