Citizens Hotline To Report the Use of Fireworks

As a result of current drought weather conditions, most Lea County entities have placed some type of restrictions on the use of fireworks.

The Lea County Communications Authority (LCCA) has implemented a “hotline” for citizens to report the use of fireworks.

In a press release on Tuesday, June 28, LCCA Director Angela Martinez announced that “this year four non-emergency numbers will be dedicated to reporting fireworks only.”

The four numbers will be available from Friday July 1 – Monday, July 4 from 8:00 pm – 1:00 am. These numbers should only be used to report non-emergency fireworks activity.

The numbers to call are:

  • (575) 433–5005
  • (575) 433–5006
  • (575) 433–5007
  • (575) 433–5008

For emergencies such as an out-of-control fire or serious injury, use 911.

According to local social media posts, residents have already begun using these numbers to report firework usage. While there are restrictions in some communities, some fireworks are still allowed under certain conditions. Fireworks that send material far into the sky or away from the area they were originally lit are typically the biggest concern and the first to banned.

Smaller fireworks, such as fountains, which can be done in one’s own driveway are not typically banned. It is advised to keep a water source nearby and ensure that no flammable material is in the area where the firework is being lit. Make sure children using fireworks have adult supervision.
