Every American should be outraged by the antics of our elected officials last week in the Oval Office. But a stubborn minority that has managed to catapult a TV reality star and failed businessman into the presidency for a second time has proven they’ll believe anything, no matter the cost. Trump’s latest tall tale came with some high pressure theatrics and a supporting role for his uncharismatic VP. The whole disgraceful incident was a bunch of bad political theater designed to give up America’s leadership role in the world.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited the White House to discuss a possible “deal” that could ostensibly lead to an end of the war in Ukraine. At the end of this visit, he left with no deal and just a plethora of headlines about the contentious meeting he had with Donald Trump in the Oval Office.
The majority of the meeting was actually very cordial. It wasn’t until the end when JD Vance, who was sitting on a couch, decided to interject. He started off on a little pre-scripted rant about Zelensky not being grateful and calling him disrespectful. This is what kicked the show off the rails.
Trump jumped in on the fun, and the two seemed to go on a little riff of Trump campaign buzzwords, including “Obama”, “Russian hoax”, and “Hunter Biden’s laptop”. Despite some weird and nonsensical tangents from Trump and Vance, Zelensky remained composed. He was clearly upset and maybe even frustrated, but he maintained the dignity and respect you would think world leaders should have when discussing the serious issue of war. Meanwhile America’s leaders had the exact level of dignity you’d expect of an 80-year old ranting about something they saw on Facebook.
The entire moment was well encapsulated by Trump insisting that Ukraine “didn’t have the cards” to play and Zelensky responding with “I am not playing cards.” This was always a game to Trump, but for Zelensky it is real. His people are dying every day defending their homes from Russian invaders. Meanwhile, Trump is playing a stupid game like his old show on NBC.
And in Trump’s game, Russia wins.
This was all political theater by Trump and Vance because they already knew they would be giving Russia what they want. There was no deal to be had. It was a ruse to get Zelensky to the Oval Office so Vance could have his little pre-planned fit. The purpose was to create headlines that they can use to sell an excuse to the American people as to why we’re abandoning our ally and giving up the fight against Russia. We’ve always known whose side Trump is on, and this ordeal was all put into place so when Trump goes back to doing Putin’s bidding, like he’s done since 2016, he can convince his supporters that actually Zelensky is the real bully and Putin, a 25-year dictator who invaded a sovereign nation, simply wants peace.
His fanatics will no doubt believe this farce, as they have believed every blatant lie from him, but everyone else knows what’s happening here. The world knows, and the history books will show the truth: under Trump, America has surrendered its position as leader of the free world, all to help Russia successfully invade its neighbor. The damage is done, and my kids are going to have to live in a world where America doesn’t just refuse to stand up for the good guys anymore, but actively works for the bad ones. We should all be ashamed, especially those of you who continue to fall for an obvious conman who has never put America first and never will.
