Details are few about the death of 19-year-old Brennon Smith of Hobbs, on Monday, September 25. On that day Hobbs police officers responded at about 6:45 PM to the 200 block of West Copper Avenue in Hobbs in response to a vehicle crash.”Officers were informed by dispatch that a vehicle has crashed into a wall and witnesses had also heard a gunshot,” states a press release issued by the Hobbs Police Department (HPD).
HPD officers were told when they arrived at the scene that “…the driver of the crashed vehicle, a silver pickup, was suffering from a gunshot wound.” Hobbs Fire Department EMS, after arriving at the scene of the crash, transported Smith to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital “where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.”
The Lea County Tribune has learned no other details about the incident, other than that the investigation is ongoing.

Update: The Hobbs Police Department (HPD) after “working timelessly” were able to obtain an arrest warrant and later arrest a 15-year-old juvenile on First Degree Murder and Attempt to Commit a Felony: to wit Robbery charges in the September 25 “…shooting which resulted in the death of 19-year-old Brennen Smith, of Hobbs,” states a Saturday, September 30, HPD press release. The arrested juvenile has been booked into the Hobbs City Jail.
The driver of the crashed vehicle, now identified as Brennen Smith, was first treated for his injuries at the scene by EMS staff and later transported by ambulance to Covenant Health Hobbs Hospital where he died.
