At the Lea County Tribune, we always strive to get a story accurate, but mistakes can and do happen. As such, we’d like to outline our corrections policy so that readers can understand what to expect from our journalists and editing staff.
Minor Grammatical and Spelling Errors
Because our content exists online where it is easy to make updates and changes as necessary, we will simply fix any minor issues such as grammar or spelling mistakes. If the correction does not significantly alter the meaning of the story or is caught relatively soon after publishing, no correction notice will be mentioned.
Additional or New Information
Occasionally new information would be brought to light which would affect an already published story. In some cases this information may necessitate its own article, but in other cases it might be enough to add the new information into an existing article.
In this case the article will be updated and a corrections notice will be placed either at the point of edit or below the article to let users know that new information was added. Dates will be included to let users know when the update was made.
Factual Errors or Clarifications
If a mistake is made that significantly alters the meaning of the story, such as quoting the wrong person or citing a source later revealed to be incorrect, a corrections notice will be placed on the article and the incorrect portion will be edited. In some cases information may not be technically incorrect but could be misleading or require more context. In those instances the article will be added and a correction notice will be added.
The location of the corrections notice will depend on the severity of the change and importance of the story. For minor errors or commonplace stories, the corrections notice will come at the end of the article. For more substantial errors or stories of significant importance to the community, the correction will be placed at the beginning of the article.
In either case the correction notice will summarize what mistaken information was included and that the article has been updated. Dates will be included to let users know when the update was made.
